David Attempts to Move the Ark

13David consulted with all his officials, including the generals and captains of his armyc.H1732H3289H8269H505H3967H5057 2Then he addressed the entire assembly of Israel as follows: "If you approve and if it is the will of the LORD our God, let us send messages to all the Israelites throughout the land, including the priests and Levites in their towns and pasturelands. Let us invite them to come and join us.H1732H559H6951H3478H2895H3068H430H7971H6555H251H7604H776H3478H3548H3881H5892H4054H6908 3It is time to bring back the Ark of our God, for we neglected it during the reign of Saul."H5437H727H430H1875H3117H7586 4The whole assembly agreed to this, for the people could see it was the right thing to do.H6951H559H6213H1697H3474H5869H5971 5So David summoned all Israel, from the Shihor Brook of Egypt in the south all the way to the town of Lebo-hamath in the north, to join in bringing the Ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.H1732H6950H3478H6950H7883H4714H935H2574H935H727H430H7157 6Then David and all Israel went to Baalah of Judah (also called Kiriath-jearim) to bring back the Ark of God, which bears the namec of the LORD who is enthroned between the cherubim.H1732H5927H3478H1173H7157H3063H5927H727H430H3068H3427H3742H8034H7121 7They placed the Ark of God on a new cart and brought it from Abinadab's house. Uzzah and Ahio were guiding the cart.H7392H727H430H2319H5699H1004H41H5798H283H5090H5699 8David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, singing songs and playing all kinds of musical instruments—lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.H1732H3478H7832H6440H430H5797H7892H3658H5035H8596H4700H2689 9But when they arrived at the threshing floor of Naconc, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the Ark.H935H1637H3592H5798H7971H3027H270H727H1241H8058 10Then the LORD's anger was aroused against Uzzah, and he struck him dead because he had laid his hand on the Ark. So Uzzah died there in the presence of God.H639H3068H2734H5798H5221H7971H3027H727H4191H6440H430 11David was angry because the LORD's anger had burst out against Uzzah. He named that place Perez-uzzah (which means "to burst out against Uzzah"), as it is still called today.H1732H2734H3068H6555H6556H5798H4725H7121H6560H3117 12David was now afraid of God, and he asked, "How can I ever bring the Ark of God back into my care?"H1732H3372H430H3117H559H1963H935H727H430 13So David did not move the Ark into the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-edom of Gath.H1732H5493H727H5892H1732H5186H1004H5654H1663 14The Ark of God remained there in Obed-edom's house for three months, and the LORD blessed the household of Obed-edom and everything he owned.H727H430H3427H1004H5654H1004H7969H2320H3068H1288H1004H5654

David’s Palace and Family

14Then King Hiram of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar timber, and stonemasons and carpenters to build him a palace.H2438H2361H4428H6865H7971H4397H1732H6086H730H7023H2796H1129H1004 2And David realized that the LORD had confirmed him as king over Israel and had greatly blessed his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.H1732H3045H3068H3559H4428H3478H4438H5375H4605H5971H3478 3Then David married more wives in Jerusalem, and they had more sons and daughters.H1732H3947H802H3389H1732H3205H1121H1323 4These are the names of David's sons who were born in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,H8034H3205H3389H8051H7727H5416H8010 5Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet,H2984H474H467 6Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia,H5052H5298H3309 7Elishama, Eliadac, and Eliphelet.H476H1182H467

David Conquers the Philistines

8When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they mobilized all their forces to capture him. But David was told they were coming, so he marched out to meet them.H6430H8085H1732H4886H4428H3478H6430H5927H1245H1732H1732H8085H3318H6440 9The Philistines arrived and made a raid in the valley of Rephaim.H6430H935H6584H6010H7497 10So David asked God, "Should I go out to fight the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?" The LORD replied, "Yes, go ahead. I will hand them over to you."H1732H7592H430H559H5927H6430H5414H3027H3068H559H5927H5414H3027 11So David and his troops went up to Baal-perazim and defeated the Philistines there. "God did it!" David exclaimed. "He used me to burst through my enemies like a raging flood!" So they named that place Baal-perazim (which means "the Lord who bursts through").H5927H1188H1732H5221H1732H559H430H6555H341H3027H6556H4325H7121H8034H4725H1188 12The Philistines had abandoned their gods there, so David gave orders to burn them.H5800H430H1732H559H8313H784 13But after a while the Philistines returned and raided the valley again.H6430H3254H6584H6010 14And once again David asked God what to do. "Do not attack them straight on," God replied. "Instead, circle around behind and attack them near the poplarc trees.H1732H7592H430H430H559H5927H310H5437H935H4136H1057 15When you hear a sound like marching feet in the tops of the poplar trees, go out and attack! That will be the signal that God is moving ahead of you to strike down the Philistine army."H8085H6963H6807H7218H1057H3318H4421H430H3318H6440H5221H4264H6430 16So David did what God commanded, and they struck down the Philistine army all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.H1732H6213H430H6680H5221H4264H6430H1391H1507 17So David's fame spread everywhere, and the LORD caused all the nations to fear David.H8034H1732H3318H776H3068H5414H6343H1471

Preparing to Move the Ark

15David now built several buildings for himself in the City of David. He also prepared a place for the Ark of God and set up a special tent for it.H6213H1004H5892H1732H3559H4725H727H430H5186H168 2Then he commanded, "No one except the Levites may carry the Ark of God. The LORD has chosen them to carry the Ark of the LORD and to serve him forever."H1732H559H5375H727H430H3881H3068H977H5375H727H430H8334H5704H5769 3Then David summoned all Israel to Jerusalem to bring the Ark of the LORD to the place he had prepared for it.H1732H6950H3478H6950H3389H5927H727H3068H4725H3559 4This is the number of the descendants of Aaron (the priests) and the Levites who were called together.H1732H622H1121H175H3881 5From the clan of Kohath, 120, with Uriel as their leader.H1121H6955H222H8269H251H3967H6242 6From the clan of Merari, 220, with Asaiah as their leader.H1121H4847H6222H8269H251H3967H6242 7From the clan of Gershonc, 130, with Joel as their leader.H1121H1647H3100H8269H251H3967H7970 8From the descendants of Elizaphan, 200, with Shemaiah as their leader.H1121H469H8098H8269H251H3967 9From the descendants of Hebron, 80, with Eliel as their leader.H1121H2275H447H8269H251H8084 10From the descendants of Uzziel, 112, with Amminadab as their leader.H1121H5816H5992H8269H251H3967H8147H6240 11Then David summoned the priests, Zadok and Abiathar, and these Levite leaders: Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab.H1732H7121H6659H54H3548H3881H222H6222H3100H8098H447H5992 12He said to them, "You are the leaders of the Levite families. You must purify yourselves and all your fellow Levites, so you can bring the Ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it.H559H7218H1H3881H6942H251H5927H727H3068H430H3478H3559 13Because you Levites did not carry the Ark the first time, the anger of the LORD our God burst out against us. We failed to ask God how to move it properly."H7223H3068H430H6555H1875H4941 14So the priests and the Levites purified themselves in order to bring the Ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to Jerusalem.H3548H3881H6942H5927H727H3068H430H3478 15Then the Levites carried the Ark of God on their shoulders with its carrying poles, just as the LORD had instructed Moses.H1121H3881H5375H727H430H3802H4133H4872H6680H1697H3068 16David also ordered the Levite leaders to appoint a choir of Levites who were singers and musicians to sing joyful songs to the accompaniment of harps, lyres, and cymbals.H1732H559H8269H3881H5975H251H7891H3627H7892H5035H3658H4700H8085H7311H6963H8057 17So the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel along with his fellow Levites: Asaph son of Berekiah, and Ethan son of Kushaiah from the clan of Merari.H3881H5975H1968H1121H3100H251H623H1121H1296H1121H4847H251H387H1121H6984 18The following men were chosen as their assistants: Zechariah, Jaazielc, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, and the gatekeepers—Obed-edom and Jeiel.H251H4932H2148H1122H3268H8070H3171H6042H446H1141H4641H4993H466H4737H5654H3273H7778 19The musicians Heman, Asaph, and Ethan were chosen to sound the bronze cymbals.H7891H1968H623H387H8085H4700H5178 20Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were chosen to play the harpsc.H2148H5815H8070H3171H6042H446H4641H1141H5035H5961 21Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were chosen to play the lyresc.H4993H466H4737H5654H3273H5812H3658H8067H5329 22Kenaniah, the head Levite, was chosen as the choir leader because of his skill.H3663H8269H3881H4853H3256H4853H995 23Berekiah and Elkanah were chosen to guardc the Ark.H1296H511H7778H727 24Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer—all of whom were priests—were chosen to blow the trumpets as they marched in front of the Ark of God. Obed-edom and Jehiah were chosen to guard the Ark.H7645H3146H5417H6022H2148H1141H461H3548H2690H2690H2689H6440H727H430H5654H3174H7778H727

Moving the Ark to Jerusalem

25Then David and the elders of Israel and the generals of the armyc went to the house of Obed-edom to bring the Ark of the LORD's Covenant up to Jerusalem with a great celebration.H1732H2205H3478H8269H505H1980H5927H727H1285H3068H1004H5654H8057 26And because God was clearly helping the Levites as they carried the Ark of the LORD's Covenant, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams.H430H5826H3881H5375H727H1285H3068H2076H7651H6499H7651H352 27David was dressed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who carried the Ark, and also the singers, and Kenaniah the choir leader. David was also wearing a priestly garmentc.H1732H3736H4598H948H3881H5375H727H7891H3663H8269H4853H7891H1732H646H906 28So all Israel brought up the Ark of the LORD's Covenant with shouts of joy, the blowing of rams' horns and trumpets, the crashing of cymbals, and loud playing on harps and lyres.H3478H5927H727H1285H3068H8643H6963H7782H2689H4700H8085H5035H3658 29But as the Ark of the LORD's Covenant entered the City of David, Michal, the daughter of Saul, looked down from her window. When she saw King David skipping about and laughing with joy, she was filled with contempt for him.H727H1285H3068H935H5892H1732H4324H1323H7586H8259H2474H7200H4428H1732H7540H7832H959H3820

16They brought the Ark of God and placed it inside the special tent David had prepared for it. And they presented burnt offerings and peace offerings to God.H935H727H430H3322H8432H168H1732H5186H7126H5930H8002H6440H430 2When he had finished his sacrifices, David blessed the people in the name of the LORD.H1732H3615H5927H5930H8002H1288H5971H8034H3068 3Then he gave to every man and woman in all Israel a loaf of bread, a cake of datesc, and a cake of raisins.H2505H376H3478H376H802H376H3603H3899H829H809 4David appointed the following Levites to lead the people in worship before the Ark of the LORD—to invoke his blessings, to give thanks, and to praise the LORD, the God of Israel.H5414H3881H8334H6440H727H3068H2142H3034H1984H3068H430H3478 5Asaph, the leader of this group, sounded the cymbals. Second to him was Zechariah, followed by Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel. They played the harps and lyres.H623H7218H4932H2148H3273H8070H3171H4993H446H1141H5654H3273H5035H3627H3658H623H8085H4700 6The priests, Benaiah and Jahaziel, played the trumpets regularly before the Ark of God's Covenant.H1141H3166H3548H2689H8548H6440H727H1285H430

Worship at Jerusalem and Gibeon

37David arranged for Asaph and his fellow Levites to serve regularly before the Ark of the LORD's Covenant, doing whatever needed to be done each day.H5800H6440H727H1285H3068H623H251H8334H6440H727H8548H3117H1697H3117 38This group included Obed-edom (son of Jeduthun), Hosah, and sixty-eight other Levites as gatekeepers.H5654H251H8346H8083H5654H1121H3038H2621H7778 39Meanwhile, David stationed Zadok the priest and his fellow priests at the Tabernacle of the LORD at the place of worship in Gibeon, where they continued to minister before the LORD.H6659H3548H251H3548H6440H4908H3068H1116H1391 40They sacrificed the regular burnt offerings to the LORD each morning and evening on the altar set aside for that purpose, obeying everything written in the Law of the LORD, as he had commanded Israel.H5927H5930H3068H4196H5930H8548H1242H6153H3789H8451H3068H6680H3478 41David also appointed Heman, Jeduthun, and the others chosen by name to give thanks to the LORD, for "his faithful love endures forever."H1968H3038H7605H1305H5344H8034H3034H3068H2617H5769 42They used their trumpets, cymbals, and other instruments to accompany their songs of praise to Godc.
